What is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside each of your teeth is dental pulp, a soft area in the center of every tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. If a tooth is damaged bacteria can reach the pul, and it can quickly become infected and cause a painful abscess. Left untreated, you may eventually lose the tooth. During a root canal treatment, this pulp is removed and replaced.

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

Despite common belief, a root canal treatment is relatively pain-free. If pain is felt, the root cause is usually the infection in the tooth. The purpose of the root canal treatment is to eliminate that pain. At Greenbelt Dental Associates, we take extra care to make sure you are comfortable and as pain-free as possible during a root canal treatment and all dental procedures. With 20 years of experience, we know how to comfort even the most anxious patients and make the entire process as simple as possible.

We can usually perform root canal treatment in one to two appointments.

Once our dentist has completed an exam, we will take X-rays to assess the signs of infection in your tooth roots, jaw bone and surrounding tissues. We will then numb the area with a local anesthetic. Our office can also provide laughing gas to help make your procedure as comfortable as we can. Then we will remove the infected pulp from inside your tooth and thoroughly clean it to flush out the infection. Finally, we will seal the tooth with a crown to restore its look, function and strength.
